Fern

January 12th, 2009

One more shot from hiking near Old Man’s Cave in Southern Ohio. This little fern had sprouted up right next to this sandstone boulder and turned up toward the sun; away from the endless shadows near the cliff above.

Moss on a log

September 8th, 2008

Caught this shot while hiking at Old Man’s Cave State Park. With macro settings, I could really pull in on the moss growing on the trunk of this fallen tree. The sunlight through the opening in the canopy set this shot up perfectly.

Bonsai

May 26th, 2008

Bonsai is the art of aesthetic miniaturization of trees by growing them in containers. Cultivation includes techniques for shaping, watering, and repotting in various styles of containers.

Originating in China during the Han Dynasty, ‘bonsai’ is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word penzai. The word bonsai is used in the West as an umbrella term for all miniature trees in containers or pots.

This is a shot of my bonsai sitting on the rail of our deck, the day I received it in the mail.

The view from Pilot Mountain

July 30th, 2007

0730.JPG

This is a shot from my visit to Pilot Mountain in June 2006. There’s a fair bit of hiking to be done to get a good view – but you’re rewarded with shots like like, if you’re willing to climb. It was a rather hot day, but we had a good time.

ND’s Grotto

July 23rd, 2007

This is a shot of the grotto at Notre Dame. The picture can’t convey how peaceful and serene a place like this can be. With the hustle and bustle of a major college campus just yards away, this place is completely removed from that element. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes should be on everyone’s list of places to visit when they’re in South Bend.

Cool water

Caught this shot on our way home from Myrtle Beach. As we transitioned out of the flat sandy beach area back into the rural farmland, we came across this swampy marsh area. For a ten miles strip, this type of landscape flanks the highway then disappears. We saw lots of fisherman along this stretch.

Greening Up

April 16th, 2007

Amazing what a few warm days and some rain can do to the landscape. Though we’re a couple weeks behind the progress in the Central part of the state, Toledo is greening-up around us. It seems to take ages to get to this stage, and then in a blink, it’s full fledged summer.

Blue Ridge Parkway

August 30th, 2004

This is a shot from the Elk Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway; elevation 3795 feet. Everyday is a beautiful day to be in the mountains, and Saturday was no exception. I cannot imagine walking outside to this view everyday.
(Ashlin, I’m jealous.)
